The Dolder Grand in Zurich
Perched above Lake Zurich against a scenic backdrop of rolling wooded hills, The Dolder Grand is both a historic landmark and a testament to contemporary architecture that pays homage to the past while epitomizing modern luxury.
The Dolder Grand: a sensational renovation project
Member of the Leading Hotels of the World, Swiss Deluxe Hotels and Design Hotels, The Dolder Grand’s elevated location between pulsating city and invigorating nature provides a magnificent view of the city of Zurich, the lake and the Alps.
The Dolder Grand offers guests the excitement of a cosmopolitan city and its pristine setting among Switzerland’s beautiful nature makes it a serene retreat from urban life as well.
From 2004 to 2008, the City Resort was fully renovated and converted by the London architects Foster and Partners.
The Dolder Grand’s venerable history dates back to 1899, when architect Jacques Gros designed the original hotel as a traditional Swiss castle. Renowned London architects Foster and Partners combined the historic Main Building of the Dolder Grand, some of which is listed, with modern architectural accoutrements.
All annexes constructed after 1899 were demolished, and two modern wings – the Spa Wing and the Golf Wing – now enclose the Main Building and echo the surrounding landscape’s gently rolling hills. The sweeping glass facades of Foster’s design offer magnificent views, as well as an aesthetic contrast to the main building’s geometric wooden framework and sharply angular steeples.
The project undertaken by Foster and Partners was reported worldwide. The renowned British Wallpaper magazine, for example, awarded The Dolder Grand the title of “Best New or Renovated Hotel”, while the American website ForbesTraveler.com included the luxury hotel in its list of the “World’s 50 Best New Hotels”, and Condé Nast Traveler added it to its “Hot List 2009”, the list of the world’s best new hotels.
In Swiss hotel ratings, The Dolder Grand ranks number one among the country’s city hotels.
